Automation in tunnel construction

Controlled operation of tunnels

Tunnels allow intersecting traffic to flow at high speeds, but involve higher risks and costs. Our tunnel automation experts help you keep the costs and risks of tunnel operation under control.

We execute tunnel construction projects for the Flemish Highways Agency (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer), the Walloon Ministry of Equipment and Transportation (Ministère wallon de l'Equipement et des Transports, MET) and the Dutch Ministry of Waterways and Public Works (Rijkswaterstaat).

Flawless monitoring

Traffic safety in tunnels is of crucial importance. This asks for flawless monitoring of what is happening inside the tunnel. Thanks to our long-standing experience of tunnel automation, you can count on the quality of our systems to keep the risks and costs to a minimum.

We install and integrate the following systems:
  • lighting, emergency lighting and ventilation
  • detection of CO and NOX levels
  • AID systems (Accident and Incident Detection)
  • fire detection and extinguishing systems
  • barriers, traffic signals and sign boards
  • surveillance cameras
  • intercom, loudspeakers and radio relay
  • fibre optic apparatus for remote control, with redundant PLC and SCADA systems
  • intruder and access control
  • pumps

Energy recovery

Part of the energy needed for the permanent tunnel lighting can be recovered via solar panels on the tunnel walls. This makes your tunnel more efficient and environment-friendly.

With longer tunnels there is often a pressure differential between the two entrances, resulting in a permanent flow of air through the tunnel. We are able to calculate and install turbines which convert the air flow into usable energy.
